30 hour Grandfather clock restoration

March 10, 2026 2 min read

We have recently completed a full service of the internal movement on a 30 hour Grandfather clock and restored this antique to its original functionality.

This much loved item had been in the family and passed through the generations, but following several relocations had ceased to function. The customer had grown up with it and was longing to hear and feel the familiarity in her home!

Initially we tried to adjust the seating and beat settings, but the thick dust and gunge that had accumulated in the movement rendered this impossible.

We transported it back to our workshop and dismantled it, stripping all the components to assess the wear.

It turned out to be fairly extensive - there was a new suspension required, 3 pallet faces and 4 bearings to replace, 4 pivots to polish, a replacement chain set and doughnut and the hammer lifting lever was scored and required filing down.

After the cleaning, repairs and new parts were added, the movement was carefully rebuilt and the necessary points were lubricated.

We tested the reassembled movement on our testing rig to check that the beat setting was correct and the strike function was fully synchronised - see video below;
